Testing

FIT-FOR-PURPOSE VALIDATION OF PIPELINES AND SYSTEMS
With over 50 years' experience in hydrotesting, pneumatic testing and all related activities, A.Hak Pipeline Services can be trusted to deliver fast, flexible and accurate results. Whether it’s a newly constructed or existing pipeline, our independent, reliable testing personnel, can provide validation, using our fit-for-purpose, advanced tools and techniques adapted to your installation’s specifications.

We provide satisfactory proof, in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations, of the safety and reliability of your pipelines and systems.

Why use A.Hak Pipeline Services system and pipeline testing?
  • Highly experienced, reliable and independent personnel.
  • Wide range of pumping equipment for testing up to 2000m3/hr with pressure ratings up to 1800 barg.
  • Wide range of instrumentation including, analog, digital, automated, registration.
  • Wide range of certified and controlled test-heads and hoses.
  • Wide range of blind flanges, spectacles, spade flanges.
  • Wide range of filtration units up to 50mu with a capacity up to 2000 m3/hr.
  • Inhibitors available for almost all purposes.
  • Wide range of pigs available on stock – no waiting time.
  • Additional services, such as drying, bolting, commissioning, pigging, can be offered on site using the same crew.
For pipeline and system validation, there are three main areas of testing:
  • Tightness test – to prove your system is tight and leak-proof
  • Strength test – to ensure your system is strong enough to hold up under intense pressure and will not collapse
  • Stress test – to register the actual SMYS in a system and by repeating this over time, integrity can be monitored.

Left - All of our test-heads are certified by Loyds/TüV/other notified bodies, and they are equipped with flanges and/or threaded connections adapted to the pipe size for optimal filling.
Right - Testing of flexible pipe on a real hose at pressure 750 barg, special precaution during filling to prevent trapped air.

A.Hak Pipeline Services offers three methods of system and pipeline testing to achieve these goals:

Hydrostatic testing
This has long been used to determine and verify pipeline integrity and obtain a variety of information about the system. The testing involves compressing a fluid in the system and, based on changes in pressure and temperature, conclusions can be calculated regarding tightness, strength and stress.

Pneumatic testing
This is more dangerous than hydrostatic testing, due to the higher energy content of compressed gas, compared to a liquid, such as water. Subsequently, this testing is limited to lower pressure and smaller systems and is most advantageous for systems that need to be dry for commissioning.

Vacuum testing
This can provide a good alternative for systems where the design may be too dangerous for pneumatic testing, or for systems designed for working under vacuum.

Testing with plugs
A new way to test a pipeline without the use of test headers is by using grip-tight plugs. This is a cost-effective, time-saving option as the use of a welder is not required for welding and cutting the test heads. These plugs can be used for pressures up to 390 bar depending on the size and type of plug.

Features of A.Hak Pipeline Services’ GriptightTM plugs:
  • Can be used to test open-end pipe and tube.
  • Safe: Pressure on plug squeezes grippers tighter; plug cannot be ejected under pressure when properly installed.
  • High pressure performance: Have been used for pipe burst tests in a manufacturing environment. Tests at higher pressure with greater safety, typically to 80% of yield.
  • Eliminates weld caps: No welding or cutting required. Speeds fabrication testing, reducing test times up to 80%.
  • Engineered seal design: Reduces seal wear for long lasting performance.
  • Positioning washer: Prevents plug loss in pipe end.
  • Retaining spring: Ensures retraction of gripper segments. Superior to O ring design.
  • Easy to maintain: Replacement seals and grippers readily available and easy to replace

For pretests of horizontal drillings we have special ‘combi pumps' for filling a moderate flow (up to 200 m3/hr) and testing a moderate pressure (up to 200 barg). These tests are performed with minimum mobilisation.
